I have learnt with great grief the passing away of Prof Bibek Brata Sarkar, my teacher, colleague, close friend who was one of the most popular teachers of Political Science at University of Delhi. The great teacher of Indian Political Thought he had the command over the thought currents in modern India and the theoretical grasp to put them in world perspective. Well-versed both in Western Political thought and Indian Political Thought he was among the rare teachers who could compare ideas with great facility. He was known for his clarity of communication and smooth and persuasive style of discussion which never intimidated any student. A resercher on Indian Socialist Movement he was also passionate about his commitment to socialism and democracy. A most warm-hearted human being he was a source of strength to his colleagues and students.
Bibekda and K B Saxena were my teachers in Ramjas College where I did my MA in 1962-64. The two of them taught me and my class  the whole of the MA syllabus in the college and  share the best that they had learnt during  the previous few years. I cannot forget that foundational experience of my career and shall always remain grateful to him.
When he moved to the Department of Political Science from K M College we were in the midst of initiating many basic changes in the syllabus and teaching programmes and his contribution to that process was enormous.
Generations of students carry his imprint and will remain grateful to him.
I pay my sincere tribute to the memory of B B Sarkar and sincere condolences to his family.
